Mercosur Crisis: Venezuela’s Temporary Presidency

Last July 29, Uruguay left the presidency of MERCOSUR and Venezuela decided to assume the chair, as it was next in line according to the semiannual rotation system by alphabetical order. However, Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay consider the Caribbean country unqualified to fill the vacancy, calling Venezuela’s democratic quality into question.
