Panama: in the final stretch to elect a new president


Panama will elect its sixth President on May 4, after the fall of the military regime in 1989. The final stretch of an electoral battle pitting current Vice-President of the country, Juan Carlos Varela, former Major of the capital, Juan Carlos Navarro, former Minister for Housing of the current government, José Domingo Arias, Union Leader Genaro López and three further independent candidates.

With less than 10 days for the elections excitement has risen after the two main polls showed quite close results between the three candidates of the major political parties in the country.

This report analyzes the political landscape of Panama and the plans of the candidates in order to meet the main needs of Panamanians: basic food and security.
